I started my day off the same as any other day watching the news. The anchors briefly mentioned a girl who has gone missing in D.C. I believe her name is Sada Massey. She is a 15-year-old African-American. What really bothered me about this was the fact that she was only mentioned for about 15 seconds. It was a here today, gone tomorrow type of thing. If this had been a missing persons report concerning a Caucasian girl, I’m more than sure there would have been more media attention. Amber alerts, man hunts, tweets, facebook postings, etc.
The color of one’s skin should not determine their importance. The truly sad part about this is that that will probably be all the media attention Sada Massey will receive. People will forget about her, and months later we will hear that she was found in some field. God forbid that does happen, but it’s the same vicious cycle time and time again. Everyone puts forth massive amounts of energy to find Caucasian girls. No one cares about the lost little Black girls. When will this end?

Here's a "article" I found about her

It is very unfortunate the society that we live in and deal with on a daily basis. I believe that minorities as a whole do not get the attention they deserve in matters like this. I also believe that it is a status issue. Minorities are seen in the media when they are high in status and when they've done something else to prove the point that caucasians have been trying to prove for so long...blacks don't know how to act. But when we truly need the help from the media they are no where to be found. To me the media sends the message that it's one less minority we have to worry about now America, when they flash the pic of a missing minority then we don't see or hear about them again unless they are found dead. It's unfortunate that we live in a society like this, but will it ever change?
ReplyDeleteNow thats the question: will it ever change? Only God knows. Jesus continue to help us all.
ReplyDeleteWell...(inhale before long typing begins)
ReplyDeleteI would like to say congrats on your first blog first and for most, the background reminds me of you. But down to the issue. I also think that it is unfortunate that a young black female who is missing is in the news for only "15 seconds" as you said. And it is likely that she will get very little attention from the media in regards to her discovery. But personally for me, race should not be the main issue here as tempting as it can be for people. There is a bigger fish to fry so to speak. Before i share what that is, i will go ahead and say that hopefully some day people will understand that the color of a persons skin shouldnt be the reason for blame when something good, bad and everything in between happens. It shouldnt be a black and white thing anymore, once we decide as individuals that we are all the same we will be better for it(for goodness sake our president is bi-racial both black and white!! we all should keep that in mind.)"the white man" isnt out to get us(the ones who are Gog bless them), we should be focusing our thoughts on greater things and how to bridge the gap between us as people) those are my feeling on that. Going back to why she only got 15 seconds on the air is the topic of discussion so i will answer with what i THINK. During my time at FOX news i was given several opportunites to see what a big market media industry is like, in conjunction with that several of the media coarses at school taught me what media markets focus on. i have come to one conclusion. Every media market has an agenda, there agenda is to keep ratings up and make lots of money. Alot of time the important news will compete with lots of other stories that may not be as important in the in the grand scheme of things but it is important to the audience that the news station wants to cater to. Weather, traffic delays, sports, and bizzare stories are what reporters want to cover because they want to have the "top story" im not saying its right, im just saying thats how it is. the average story is on the news is between 1min to 4mins. The people who run these stations want to keep people dialed into the network so the try to cram as much stuff in as possible. without going into more detail as they should sometimes.
ps hope i aint talk to long...
